About Education in Pondicherry

The quiet little town situated in the southern part of India boasts of a high literacy rate of 81.49%. The literacy rate for males and females in Pondicherry are 86.07% and 75.29% respectively. One of the major educational hubs of the region, Pondicherry houses some of the best and prestigious centers of higher studies in India. The quality education system of the Union territory attracts students from all over the nation. Several projects and educational schemes launched by the government aims at improving the condition of education in the state. Like other states and union territories of India special attention is given to primary education in the state.      

Primary education has been made compulsory and free for students up to a certain age limit in Pondicherry.  Schools in Pondicherry are either government aided or run by private organizations. Some of the schools are affiliated to the state board of education while others follow ICSE or CBSE syllabus.
The total number of schools operating in Pondicherry is approximately 863. Most of the schools in the union territory are best known for their excellent infrastructure and educational facilities.

Tamil and English are the main medium of instruction in the Pondicherry schools. French is also taught in some of the schools and this reflects the presence of French culture still in Pondicherry. Most of the ICSE and CBSE schools prefer English as their medium of instruction.
